Home Safety Evaluation
We know that most aging people desire to remain in their own homes, and many of our services are geared towards making this possible for our clients.
But we also know that the home can become a dangerous place for someone going through a difficult transition alone. That’s why a thorough home safety evaluation is an important part of our initial assessment process.
The information we gather helps us improve conditions around the house to make life easier and safer for your loved one. And addressing some of the hazards early might make the difference in staying home or having to look elsewhere for a more protective environment.
It is estimated that one third of all people aged 60 years and older suffer falls each year. Because so many of these accidents occur in the bathroom, it is vital that caregivers know what they can do to minimize the risk and increase mobility in this area of the home. Simple changes to lifestyle and some inexpensive purchases can provide peace of mind while preventing falls and injuries.
Here Are Some Everyday Bathroom Safety Tips:
- Carefully check hot water temperature and make sure it doesn’t exceed 140 degrees F
- Install a ground fault circuit interrupter on bathroom outlets to detect and stop any improper flow of electricity
- Use non-skid rugs on bathroom floors
- Increase stability and balance with grab bars for getting in and out of the shower/tub
- Install an elevated toilet to reduce stress on the back, legs and knees
- Make it easy to call for help with a telephone reachable from the bathroom floor, or a cordless phone that can be used while bathing
